The Ashes 2023
‘Le Australia – Labuschange kab khulega tera khoon’ – Fans react as England batter Joe Root becomes number 1 Test Batter
Star England batter Joe Root has been phenomenal in the last few years. As a Test batter, the former England skipper has scored 13 centuries since 2019, the highest among the fab four. In the ongoing Ashes series, Root scored a magnificent century against Australia on the Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test. His amazing batting performances helped him replace Marnus Labuschange to become the new number-one ranked Test batter.
Root has been phenomenal throughout the game as he scored a magnificent century in the first innings and a quick 40s in the second innings. He remained unbeaten after scoring 118 runs off 152 balls with the help of seven boundaries and four sixes in the first innings, while in the second innings, he scored 46 runs off 55 balls with the help of five boundaries and a six. He also clinched a wicket in the second innings as he dismissed Alex Carey for 20 off 50 balls. This helped him to gain his position in Allrounders ranking as he is the 8th ranked Test allrounder.
It’s worth noting that, Australia batter Labuschange, who was at the top for the last six months, failed against Australia in the first Test. He scored just 13 runs in two innings, including a golden duck in the first innings. He dropped two places to become a third-ranked batter. His teammates Travis Head and Steve Smith also lost one and four places respectively to become fourth and sixth-ranked Test batters.
Ravichandran Ashwin leads the bowler’s pack
In the latest rankings, ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is leading the bowler’s pack. He is a top-ranked bowler with 860 rating points followed by James Anderson (829), Kagiso Rabada (825), Pat Cummins (824) and Ollie Robinson (802). Australia skipper Cummins lost third place to Rabada with just one rating point, while English pacer Ollie Robinson gained one place to make it to the top 5.
There are minute changes in Allrounders ranking as Joe Root replaced Mitchell Starc to become 8th ranked Test allrounder. The Indian duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin top the table with 434 and 352 rating points. Bangladesh allrounder Shakib Al Hasan is third-ranked with 332 points followed by Axar Patel (310) and Ben Stokes (309). The second Test between England and Australia will be played at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London from June 28.
