The 58th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants. With the group stages coming to an end, both teams needed to win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive.

On a quality batting pitch, the home team won the toss and opted to bat first. Anmolpreet Singh got the Men in Orange off to a fast start, scoring 36 runs off 27 balls. Anmolpreet’s opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, lost his wicket soon, but Rahul Tripathi and skipper Aiden Markram provided excellent assistance with brief cameos. They scored 20 and 28 runs in their respective innings.

Heinrich Klaasen and Abdul Samad’s pair, in the meantime, pushed the Sunrisers to a solid total in the first innings. The pair made 58 runs for the sixth wicket, giving their team a substantial boost. Klaasen scored 47 runs off 29 balls before being dismissed on the penultimate delivery of the 19th over.

Abdul Samad, on the other hand, scored 37 runs in 25 balls to help SRH reach 182/6. LSG’s skipper, Krunal Pandya, got two wickets, while Yudhvir Singh, Avesh Khan, Yash Thakur, and Amit Mishra each took one.

Marcus Stoinis changes the course of the game for LSG

With in-form Kyle Mayers back in the dugout, the Men in Blue got off to a slow start, adding only 30 runs on the powerplay. The batters looked to be going slowly, making reaching the total appear difficult.

Marcus Stoinis, though, turned the game’s trajectory after Quinton de Kock‘s wicket in the ninth over. Initially, Prerak Mankad served as the anchor, while Stoinis ripped through the SRH bowlers. He hit 40 runs in 25 balls before being dismissed in the 16th over, leaving 43 runs to win in 27 balls.

Then, in the middle, Nicholas Pooran joined Mankad, who had finished his half-century, and picked up where Stoinis left off. The two batted superbly and helped Lucknow win. Pooran scored 44 runs in 13 balls, while Mankad scored 64 runs in 45 balls. LSG defeated SRH by seven wickets with four balls remaining. With this victory, they climbed to the fourth position in the standings.
