Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea wins theGolden Glove after clean sheet against Wolves
David De Gea of Manchester United has effectively won the Golden Glove trophy for the 2022–23 Premier League season. During United’s 2-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday, the Spaniard recorded his 16th clean sheet of the year, earning the distinction for a second time. The 32-year-old has had a difficult season; his future has recently been called into question as the summer transfer window draws near.
The Spaniard hasn’t let the rumours that his tenure at Old Trafford might be coming to an end affect his performances during the season, and he is allegedly about to sign a new contract with the team. Although he isn’t yet an outright winner, his performance in goal with the Red Devils this season has him at the top of the Premier League’s list of clean sheets. The odds of any of the remaining three goalkeepers matching De Gea’s total, which would require him to split the prize, are slim.
With three games left, Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope, and Alisson Becker each have 13 clean sheets. If De Gea makes an error in his last three games along with one of the other three keepers being unbeaten in the subsequent games, they will tie De Gea’s record. The Spaniard, who previously won the honour during the 2017–18 season, will be claiming the trophy for the second time in his career. During that season, De Gea was also the United’s Player of the Year for displaying some of the best performances ever seen in the league.
What is Manchester United offering to David De Gea in his new contract?
Despite recent doubts about his future at United, the custodian is reportedly close to agreeing to a new contract with the team that will result in a pay decrease from his current £375,000 weekly income. Given his erratic form as he is brilliant one week and weird the next and the fact that no one in Europe would pay him more, his new contract, which is roughly £200,000 per week, puts him roughly on par with the remainder of the United defence line.
