Indian opening batter Shubman Gill has been fined 15% of his match fees for showing dissent over the third umpire’s decision during the recently ended World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia. Apart from that, Gilll has also been fined 100% of his match fees along with the whole Indian team for maintaining a slow over-rate while the Australian team have been fined 80 per cent of their match fees.
Notably, the 23-year-old was given out in a controversial manner on Day 4 of the Test match. During the fourth innings of the match. In the fourth over. Scott Bolland’s spell, Gill nicked a ball that flew to Cameron Green at Gully. Green’s reaction suggested he had taken the catch but the replays suggested that the ball may have in fact touched the ground. However, the third umpire Richard Kettleborough remained with the decision and declared Gill out.
After that, Gill took to social media to express his disappointment over the third umpire’s decision, as he shared a story on his Instagram where he posted a zoomed-in picture of Green taking the catch with the ‘clapping emojis.’ However, the Indian batter has now been punished by the Apex Cricket Council for breaching Article 2.7 of their Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
India lost the WTC final to Australia
Talking about the match, after being asked to bat first, Australia posted a total of 469 runs in their first innings, powered by the centuries by Steve Smith (121 runs) and Marnus Labuschagne (164 runs), In reply India could only reach to 296 runs as Ajinkya Rahane turned to be the top scorer for the team. Playing his comeback match, Rahane got out after scoring 89 runs off 129 balls. While Shardul Thakur also went on to score his third consecutive fifty at the Oval.
After getting a big first-innings lead, Australia declared their second innings 270 runs for the loss of 8 wickets giving India a mammoth target of 444 runs. Alex Carey top-scored 66 runs off 105 balls. Chasing the winning total, India lost early wickets as the score was reduced to 93 for 3. After that Kohli and Rahane put up a partnership of 86 runs for the fourth wicket. However, after the partnership was broken, the Australian bowlers didn’t took much time to take the rest of the wickets as they bowled India out for 234 runs and won the match by 209 runs to clinch the Test mace.

This rule of players showing dissent over the decision of umpires needs a major revamp. If players are criticizing in a respectful manner then there should be no fine however on the contrary if there is abuse that 100% deserves a fine. The game needs drama to create memories.

One thing Gill should learn is to accept things on their face value. There will be moments like these in his career, he doesn’t need to complain on SM rather should let his bat do the talking. There will also be incidents where he would be lucky to been given not out
