‘Naagins killed by Lions’ – Fans react as Sri Lanka defeat Bangladesh by 21 runs in Asia Cup 2023
After losing the first match against Pakistan by seven wickets at the Gadaffi Stadium, in Lahore, Bangladesh locked horns with Sri Lanka in the second fixture of the Super Fours at the Asia Cup 2023 in the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka won the match by 21 runs and Sadeera Samwickrama was awarded the Player of the Match for his match-winning performance.
If we talk about the match, Bangladesh skipper, Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and elected to bowl first. While batting first, the Lankan side scored 257 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their 50 overs. The highest scorer for the side was Sadeera Samawickrama who slammed 93 runs off 72 balls with eight fours and two sixes in his innings. Their wicketkeeper-batter, Kusal Mendis also scored crucial 50 runs from 73 balls which included six fours and a six in his innings.
Bangladesh bundled out for 236 runs in 48.1 overs
The pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh was the duo of right-arm seamers, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud who snapped three wickets each in their respective spells of 10 overs and nine overs where they conceded 62 runs and 57 runs in their spell, respectively. Also, two wickets were grabbed by the left-arm pacer, Shoriful Islam in his spell of eight overs where he conceded 48 runs.
The Bangla Tigers, while chasing a target of 259 runs, started off well. The openers. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim buit a partnership of 55 runs for the first wicket before the former was dismissed after scoring 28 runs off 29 balls with four fours in his innings. Expierienced batters like Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim failed to leave their impact as they all went back to the pavillion cheaply.
Bangladesh middle-order batter, Towhid Hridoy scored 82 runs off 97 balls which included seven fours and and a six in his innings. For the Lankan Lions, the pick of the bowler was Maheesh Theekshana, Dasun Shanaka, and Matheesha Pathirana who snapped three wicket each in their respective spells of nine overs and conceded 69 runs, 28 runs, and 58 runs in their spells, respectively. Bangladesh was bundled out for 236 runs in 48.1 overs.
