‘Naam bade aur darshan chote’ – Bangalore loses four matches on the spin in Women’s T20 League

The Bangalore franchise are still looking for their first win in the inaugural season of the Women’s T20 league. Smriti Mandhana’s side suffered their fourth consecutive loss on the tournament against the UP franchise on Friday. Bangalore have been struggling with both bat and ball in the tournament and have not been able to capitalize on the good start they have been getting in the powerplay.

Bangalore had quite a good start against UP as they scored 54 runs in the first six overs for the loss of only one wicket. They were looking for a big total but yet again, the middle order collapsed as they got bowled out for 138 runs in 19.3 overs. Ellyse Perry managed to score a fine half-century with 52 runs off 39 balls. She also added 44 runs Sophie Devine (36 off 24) for the second wicket but didn’t get any support from the other batters. Sophie Ecclestone was the main anchor of UP’s bowling by picking up 4 wickets conceding 13 runs in her 3.3 overs, while Deepti Sharma scalped 3 wickets.

There was no fight shown from Bangalore bowlers as UP chased the winning total without losing any wickets. Skipper Alyssa Healy was on fire mode as she remained unbeaten scoring 96 runs off just 47 deliveries. She smashed 18 fours and a maximum in her inning as UP won the match with seven overs remaining.

This is the fourth time that the opposition has been able to score at a run rate of more than 10 against the Bangalore bowlers. They have been able to pick up nine wickets from the four games played so far. Also, where other teams are scoring 200+ in almost every match, Bangalore seems to be struggling in the middle overs even after a fine start in the powerplay.

Mandhana is yet to deliver the Women’s T20 League

Smriti Mandhana was roped in by the franchise for a big amount of INR 3.40 crore and became the most expensive player in the 2023 auction. Bangalore then announced Mandhana as their kipper for the tournament but she hasn’t been able to deliver what she promised before the start of the season.

Mandhana has scored 80 runs in the ongoing tournament so far with an average of 20. She got good starts against Delhi and Mumbai, but couldn’t capitalize and failed to score big in both matches. Her highest score is of 35 runs off 23 balls in the first game against the Delhi franchise.

Only two batters have been able to score a half-century for Bangalore in the tournament. As Perry scored fifty in the last game, Devine made 66 runs off 45 balls against Gujarat chasing 202 runs. However, her knock went in vain as Bangalore fell short of the total by 11 runs.

Bangalore currently stands in the last position in the points table and they need to win all the remaining matches in order to secure their spot in the top three.
