‘Peaking before the final’ – Fans react as Guyana Amazon Warriors beat Jamaica Tallawahs by 81 runs in CPL 2023

The second qualifier of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) took place between Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW). And Jamaica Tallawahs (JT) JT won the toss and chose to bowl. GAW got off to a sedate start as they lost Kelvon Anderson early after he made four of five balls with one boundary.

Saim Ayub made 20 off 15 balls with three fours before he was caught by Alex Hales off Shamar Springer. At 54-2 it seemed that GAW were on a slippery slope but Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer did the repair work for the side. Hope made 40 off 33 balls with four fours. Hetmyer made 31 off 29 balls with two fours and one six.

The Hero for GAW was Azam Khan. The Pakistani came in and threw the wind out of the JT bowler’s sails. He made a quickfire 54 off 27 balls with five fours and five sixes. This performance meant that GAW finished off on 182-6 in their 20 overs. Nicholson Gordon picked up 2-27 in his four overs for JT.

Imran Tahir picked up 3-7 in just 2.2 overs for Guyana Amazon Warriors

In the second innings, JT were not up to the task as they failed to turn up for the big game. They lost all their wickets like nine pins. Imad Wasim was the only one who showed some resistance as the Pakistan international made 43 off 33 balls with five fours and one six. For GAW Imran Tahir was the pick of the bowlers as he took 3-7 in his spell of 2.2 overs. The leg-spinner keeps getting better with age.

Dwaine Pretorious took 2-21 in his four overs. Romario Shepherd, Ronsford Beaton Gudakesh Motie and Odean Smith picked up a wicket each in their respective spells. A comprehensive bowling performance from GAW meant that JT capitulated to 101 in just 15.2 overs. GAW won by a big margin of 81 runs and marched into the CPL final. The final will be a repeat of the first qualifier as GAW will take on TKR.
