The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday led his team for the first time in World Cup history. India won the opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia by six wickets. Rohit Sharma couldn’t get off the mark yesterday but his record in the tournament is impeccable.

The 36-year-old made his ODI World Cup debut in Adelaide eight years ago. The opponents were Pakistan and Rohit could score only 15 runs in his first World Cup outing. It is well-documented how crestfallen Rohit Sharma was when he wasn’t picked for the ODI World Cup in 2011.

The following two World Cups saw the stylish right–hander from Mumbai become a batting great. While his record in bilateral series is exemplary, Rohit’s record in World Cups is just as mind-blowing.

Making his ODI World Cup debut in 2015, Rohit Sharma scored 330 runs from the 8 games he played. The right-handed opener hit one century and two half-centuries with an average of 47.1. His only century came against Bangladesh in Melbourne during the quarter-final stages of the tournament.

Rohit Sharma then took run scoring to a different level by scoring an amazing 648 runs in 2019. This was a mind-blowing number in just one single edition of the Cricket World Cup. This feat by Rohit Sharma only trails Sachin Tendulkar’s 2003 ODI World Cup numbers.

The swashbuckling batter from Mumbai began with 122 not out against South Africa in Southampton. This was followed by yet another half-century (57) versus Australia in Oval. Rohit then scored 140 runs against Pakistan in the biggest game of the ODI World Cup 2019.

The then 32-year-old failed to get going versus Afghanistan and West Indies scoring 1 and 18 respectively. What happened next was amazing as Rohit Sharma scored three centuries in a row. Starting with 102 versus England in Birmingham followed by 104 versus Bangladesh at the same venue. Rohit then scored 103 runs off just 94 balls versus Sri Lanka in Leeds.

India did not win the 2019 World Cup as Rohit was out for just 1 run in the final four games against New Zealand. The Indian skipper now has 978 runs and needs 22 runs to score 1000 runs in World Cup cricket.

If he manages to achieve this feat against Afghanistan on Wednesday, Rohit will become the fastest batter to record this feat. It will better the feat achieved by David Warner when he became the fastest to reach 1000 World Cup runs against India in Chennai.
