Shreyas Iyer opens up on not getting selected in 20-20 World Cup squad

Shreyas Iyer is an integral part of team India across formats. He has cemented his place in the Test team and has also become a vital cog in India’s ODI team.

However, Iyer hasn’t been able to make a similar impact in the shortest format while donning the Indian jersey. His struggles with short balls didn’t help him find a place in India’s squad for the 20-20 World Cup 2022.

Recently, he opened up about not getting selected in India’s 20-20 World Cup squad. Iyer said that he felt disappointed but didn’t let himself too much affected by that and continued to make improvements in his game.

“It was disappointing. It is something that you dream as a kid, to represent your country at the biggest stage. Winning it for the team is also something which gives you the chills,” Iyer told Hindustan Times.

“But it was not that I was completely demotivated. I didn’t let that get into my mind. I was just doing my things right. I focused on myself. I took a break, went and played domestic cricket. It gave me more time to elevate my skills,” said Iyer. He said that he likes to interact with people and find out what they think about him when he faces disappointment.

Iyer loves to take feedback about his game from his peers and his family. Shedding light on the same, he said:

“At the end of the day, you want to gain respect from your teammates and parents. It is something that motivates you as a player. It helps get the best out of you when under the pump and I love to do that. Whenever I am not feeling well, I interact with family and friends, try to take my mind off cricket so that I come back stronger. These are the small aspects I focus on; it has been going tremendously well for me,” he said.

Shreyas Iyer isn’t part of India’s squad for the ongoing T20 series against Sri Lanka but will be making his comeback in the ODI series, which will be followed, thereafter.
