Indian batting order were sent back into the hut after they lost three wickets for just two runs. Mitchell Starc began the fight back as Josh Hazlewood joined in the fray while defending 200 runs to win.
The Indian cricket fans had no clue as they were looking shocked at the scenes that unfolded on Sunday. The Chennai fans sat in complete despair as India made a mockery of their own batting to start the chase.
Rohit Sharma and his team bowled out Australia for 199 in the 50th over thanks to the Indian spin trio. The Australians were left dazed thanks to Ravindra Jadeja whose three wickets in two overs changed the game.
Starc and Hazlewood breathe fire to shock India –
Ishan Kishan was given a chance to open the innings along with Rohit Sharma. The young left-hander though left the fans disappointed after being dismissed for first ball duck. Mitchell Starc’s away-going ball had Kishan going for a wild drive only to be caught in the slips by Cameron Green.
Rohit Sharma was the next to go when he was out LBW for a six-ball duck to Josh Hazlewood. The Indian skipper couldn’t believe what had happened as he went for a DRS. The decision though stayed with the on-field umpire as Rohit had to take the walk back to the pavilion.
Shreyas Iyer had scores of 105 and 48 the last time he batted against Australia. On Sunday it was all over for just two. David Warner was jubilant when he caught Iyer for a duck. Josh Hazlewood had his second Indian batter for the over as the home team was now reduced to 2 for 3.
Australia could only muster 199 on the board thanks to the Indian spin bowling trio. Local CSK hero Ravindra Jadeja got into the thick of the action by dismissing Steve Smith. This was followed by wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in a single over. Jadeja ended the day with figures of 3/28 from his 10 overs.
This was best the bowling figures by an Indian left-arm spinner against Australia in the World Cup. Kuldeep Yadav finished with 2/42 claiming David Warner and Glenn Maxwell. Veteran bowler Ashwin finished with 1/34 from his ten over in front of his home crowd in Chennai.
