Asia Cup 2023

‘So yes it is an area of concern…’ – Sunil Gavaskar’s bold verdict on Shreyas Iyer’s injury in Asia Cup 2023

Team India has locked horns against Sri Lanka in their second match of the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2023 at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 12. Notably, India’s stalwart Shreyas Iyer wasn’t available to get a place in the squad after suffering from a back spasm. This is the biggest worry for India’s middle order, as the ODI World Cup is around the corner and set to commence on October 5.

The right-handed batter only played the group stage match against Pakistan while looking into the terrific form but missed the Super Fours opening game against Pakistan and the ongoing game against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. In addition, the KKR skipper sustained injuries during the fourth Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, which led him to miss the IPL, the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies tour, and the Ireland tour but got him placed in the Asia Cup as well as the ODI World Cup squad.

It is sad as Shreyas Iyer looked good in match against Pakistan: Sunil Gavaskar

Following this blow, a plethora of former cricketers and experts lashed out at team management and expressed disappointment at this setback. Notably, former India cricketer turned analyst Sunil Gavaskar is one of them. The legendary cricketer feels that it is an area of concern as the ODI World Cup will begin in less than a month. Meanwhile, the cricket commentator shares that he loved the right-handed batter’s cover drive against Pakistan in their opening game of the Asia Cup 2023.

“It’s a worry definitely. If a player is out for 5-6 months due to an injury and then has it again with a month before the World Cup, so yes it is an area of concern. Luckily, you can make changes in your World Cup team, and in case he is unfit and doesn’t recover then there will be somebody who will replace him. It is sad because he looked good in that match against Pakistan. He played a lovely cover drive,” Sunil Gavaskar said on  Sports Today.
