Sri Lanka Cricket, Bangladesh Cricket Board support Indian manangement over Asia Cup 2023 shifting out of Pakistan
It seems that the conflict related to Men’s Asia Cup 2023 between India and Pakistan isn’t going to resolve any time soon. Since September last year, both India and Pakistan Cricket Board have been going at loggerheads over the venue of the tournament. It all started when the Indian Cricket Board secretary and ACC president said that the Men In Blue can’t travel to Pakistan.
“I told my members at the AGM that the Asia Cup 2023 will be held at a neutral venue,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who also heads the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) told reporters. “We (India) can’t go there, they (Pakistan) can’t come here. In the past also the Asia Cup has been played at a neutral venue.”
This made the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by Ramiz Raja, furious. They threatened not to participate in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. However, right before Raja’s term as PCB chairperson was terminated, he admitted that he and the board has no problems with the Indian board and that the team will participate in the World Cup.
Najam Sethi’s hybrid model is not feasible for Asian Cricket Council
Meanwhile, after Sethi replaced Raja, the former proposed a Hybrid model for India. In other words, they asked India if they can play their games in a neutral venue. However, in recent times, the Asian Cricket Council has rejected the idea of citing expenses and recovery ratio. Meanwhile, as reported by GEO Sports (Pakistani media), the likes of Sri Lanka Cricket and Bangladesh Cricket Board have rejected the idea of playing in the hybrid model.
They are believed to have asked the PCB to shift the entire tournament outside of Pakistan. If this is true, it will be a major blow to Pakistan Cricket Board as they are desperate to play the tournament at home. The last time Asia Cup was played in Pakistan was back in 2008, with Sri Lanka beating India in the final.
