‘Sri Lanka ke liye bada loss hai’ – Fans react as Wanindu Hasananga reportedly gets ruled out of World Cup 2023

Sri Lanka have suffered a massive jolt before the 2023 World Cup as Wanindu Hasaranga is ruled out of World Cup 2023 due to a grade three hamstring tear. The wrist-spinner was in roaring form in the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL). Hasaranga was the highest wicket-taker and leading six-hitter in the tournament. Hasaranga also stepped down from Test cricket recently to prolong his limited-overs career. The all-rounder was an impact player in the T20 World Cup in 2022 for his side.

Sri Lanka punched above their weight in the Asia Cup as the Islanders made it to the final of the multilateral tournament. When we talk about the Islanders, they recently had a scare as there were reports that Dasun Shanaka could be stepping down as Sri Lankan skipper. But in the end, those reports proved to be false. Even in the Asia Cup, the Men from the Emerald Isle lost four or five players due to injury.

Wanindu Hasanga has scored 832 runs in ODIs and also picked up 67 wickets

The Lankan Lions would have fancied themselves as a threat in India. But now with the big loss of Hasaranga, it looks like Sri Lanka is staring down the barrel. When it comes to World Cups the Sri Lankans have won the World Cup in 1996 and made it to the finals of the 2007 and 2011 editions. In the Asia Cup, they did not have a final to remember as they were bundled out for 50 by India courtesy of Mohammed Siraj, who picked up a six-wicket haul.

When we look at Hasaranga in ODIs, the all-rounder has scored 832 runs in 48 matches at an average of 23.77. He has also picked up 67 wickets with three five-wicket hauls. His skills and ability to change games will be a big miss to Sri Lanka. But the Islanders would still be considered as a team to watch out for as they are no pushovers. Sri Lanka would try to emulate what transpired in the 2011 World Cup in India and also look to bring the World Cup home.
