Stuart Broad creates history during Ashes 2023 by becoming first player to achieve double milestone in Test cricket

Published on

After Stuart Broad announced his retirement from cricket during the fifth Ashes Test, his name was on everyone’s mind. For a long time, Broad was one of the English team’s most potent weapons in Test cricket. He began playing with James Anderson in 2008, and the two of them quickly rose to fame in Test cricket. Broad also left behind a legacy that is difficult to transmit.

Off his final ball faced and bowled in a Test Cricket match, the 37-year-old did a double contribution for the team, hitting a six and taking a wicket. In the 146-year history of the format, he became the first and only player to achieve these two feats. In the explosive Ashes series, he also accomplished a rare milestone that no Indian had ever reached before.

Broad is now the sixth player in Test Cricket history to amass 1000 runs and 100 wickets against an opponent. In the Ashes 2023 match against Australia, the speedster broke the record. Broad reached the 1000-run milestone in the fourth Ashes Test despite having already taken over a hundred wickets against the Australians. In Test matches against Australia, he concluded his career with 153 wickets and 1019 runs.

There have been five players in the history

In the history of the game, there have been five players who have achieved this feat of scoring 1000 runs and taking 100 wickets against a team. Earlier, England’s Ian Botham and Wilfred Rhodes had earlier achieved this against Australia. Along with that the Australian George Giffen as well as Monty Noble achieved a similar feat against England.

Similarly, talking about teams that are not a part of Ashes, the West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers achieved a similar milestone playing against England. Moreover, there has been no Indian cricketer who has achieved a similar feat. When the players to score maximum runs against any opponent is concerned then, Sachin Tendulkar holds that record of scoring 3630 runs against Australia which is the highest for any India batter.

Similarly, when wickets are concerned, Ravichandran Ashwin stands on top with 114 scalps but he has also piled on 543 runs against the Aussies.
