Sunil Chettri pulls out of King’s Cup as India announce their squad

The Indian football team is on a high after their recent performances. The Indian team under the captaincy of Sunil Chettri has managed to reach the 99th place in the latest FIFA rankings.

Coach Igor Stimac has been using every international commitment as a chance to test his players. The eyes of the Indian team will be on the 2023 AFC Asian Cup championship. The tournament is set to be hosted by Qatar. India finds itself in Group B with Australia, Syria and Uzbekistan.

The Indian football team is getting ready for the 2023 King’s Cup which is to be hosted by Thailand. The tournament will see just four games being played with two semi-finals. This will be followed by the third-place game before the final which will be played.

Indian team for the King’s Cup 2023 named –

The Indian football board named the team that is set to play the King’s Cup tournament. The four-nation tournament is set to start on 7th September before the final is being played on 10th September.

Indian skipper Sunil Chettri is set to give the tournament a miss due to personal reasons. Chettri is set to welcome the birth of his first child while the tournament will be played. The Indian team is set to welcome back Brandon Fernandes and Suresh Singh Wangjam.

The Indian team begins their campaign with the Semi-Final game against Iraq on 7th September. Iraq is the highest-ranked team of the tournament with a FIFA ranking of 74. The winner of the game will take on the winners of Thailand versus Lebanon in the other semi-finals.

Thailand who are the hosts is the most successful team in the history of King’s Cup with 15 titles. India on the other hand has never won the tournament. The best finish for the Indian team has been third place finish which they achieved twice in 1977 and 2019.
