To score his third T20I century, Suryakumar toyed with the Sri Lankan bowlers, hitting fours and maximums at will and in his signature style all over the field. Surya took just 19 deliveries to reach the 100-run threshold after completing his fifty in 26 balls. He hit a six and a four off Chamika Karunaratne in the final over to put the innings away in style. Suryakumar scored a century in Rajkot by slamming seven fours and nine sixes.
India scored a staggering 228/5 in the first innings of the match. They reached this total with the aid of Surya and cameos from Shubman Gill (46 in 36 balls) and Rahul Tripathi (35 in 16 balls). The Lankan batters were then brutalised by the bowlers, who held them to a total of 137 in under 17 overs to secure a 91-run victory.
The 32-year-old cricketer acknowledged that some of the shots he played during the innings were planned and that he intended to target the shorter side of the boundary. “Boundaries behind are like 50-60 meters, so I was targeting them. There are some shots that are pre-determined but you need to have other shots too so that if the bowler changes his plan, you can have an answer,” he said in the post-match presentation after receiving the Player of the Match award.
