‘Taash ke Patto ki tarah jadh gayi’ – Fans dejected as Joburg Super Kings get bundled out for 81

Published on

In the fourth match of the SA20 League 2023, Paarl Royals locked horns against the Joburg Super Kings (JSK) at Boland Park, Paarl on Friday, January 13. JSK skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bat first. None of their batters could quite get going on the day, and the Joburg side, who were terrific in their debut game against the Durban Super Giants, appeared to be a pale imitation of themselves against the hosts.

The Johannesburg-based team never looked confident and frequently lost wickets. The Super Kings had already lost their top order during the powerplay, and the early dismissal of in-form Donovan Ferreira for just 6 runs against his name meant that they had to play out of their skin simply to put a reasonable total on the board.

Paarl Royals earn their first victory in SA20 2023

The Paarl Royals spinners kept things tight and wickets falling frequently from one end simply did not aid JSK’s cause. JSK were bowled out for just 81 runs in 18th over, despite the best efforts of tail-ender Lizaad Williams, who scored unbeaten 17 runs, as he ran out of partners.

In response, the Paarl Royals lost Jason Roy and Wihan Lubbe early, but Jos Buttler and Dane Vilas made sure that the Joburg bowlers were unable to mount a comeback. Vilas was out for a run-a-ball 13 and the formalities were finished in the 11th over by Buttler (29* off 21) and David Miller (8* off 4).

On January 13, at Boland Park, the Paarl Royals defeated the Joburg Super Kings to earn their first victory in the ongoing SA20 2023 competition. They won by seven wickets after suffering a crushing eight-wicket loss to MI Cape Town in the curtain-raiser. This victory has helped the Royals move up a bit in the points table.

The left-arm orthodox Bjorn Fortuin from the Royals was awarded the Man of the Match award for his brilliant spell of 4-0-16-3.
