‘Take it ‘Issy’ Wong’ – Fans react as Mumbai pacer becomes first player to take hat-trick in Women’s T20 League

In the eliminator of the Women’s T20 League, Mumbai beat UP by 72 runs to qualify for the finals of the tournament. After batting first, Mumbai posted a competitive total of 182/4 in 20 overs and restricted UP to just 110 runs. Star England pacer Issy Wong shined in Mumbai’s victory as she clinched four wickets including a hat-trick.

The 20-year-old pacer registered her first hat trick of the Women’s T20 League as she became unplayable for UP. While Chasing 183 in a high-pressure game UP failed to hold nerves and got toppled by Mumbai’s pacer. In the 13th over of the chase, Wong dismissed dangerous Kiran Navgire for 43 off 26 balls. She was caught by Nat Sciver-Brunt at the midwicket on the second ball of the over. In the next two balls, Wong cleaned up Simran Shaikh and Sophie Ecclestone to complete her hat trick.

With this hat-trick, UP was pushed out of the game as they were restricted to 87 runs by losing seven wickets. In the crucial run chase, UP failed to hold its nerves and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Openers Shweta Sehrawat and Captain Allysa Healy were dismissed by Shaika Ishaque and Issy Wong in two consecutive overs while Tahila McGrath got run out. UP was bundled up for 110 runs in 17.4 overs handing Mumbai a huge win.

Earlier after winning the toss UP skipper, Allysa Healy decided to bowl first. Their decision didn’t go well with them as they failed to clinch early wickets. However, they also didn’t allow Mumbai to score fluently and restricted them to 104/3 in 13 overs. UP were very poor in the field as Sophie Ecclestone dropped an easy catch of Nat Sciver-Burnt in the sixth over when she was playing at 6 runs.

Sciver-Burnt capitalized on the opportunity and hammered UP bowlers all around the park. She scored another half-century in a do-or-die game. Sciver-Burnt hammered unbeaten 72 runs off 38 balls with the help of nine boundaries and two 6s. She also added 60 runs for the fourth wicket with Melie Kerr and led Mumbai to a comfortable position. Kerr in her innings scored 29 runs off 19 balls with the help of five boundaries.

Meanwhile, fans react to Issy Wong’s match-winning bowling spell and call her a star in making. A Twitter user said, “Mumbai don’t buy superstars they make it.”
