Taylor Fritz shuts booing crowd after defeating Arthur Rinderknech in French Open
American Tennis star Taylor Fritz lost his cool at the crowd booing as he shushes during the French Open match against Arthur Rinderknech. Notably, the crowd wasn’t happy when Fritz defeated one of their own — their last man in the bracket. They kept booing and whistling relentlessly against him. In response, Fritz also told the crowd to shush over and over again.
The 25-year-old from California who is seeded at number 9 at Roland Garros, got into a back-and-forth with the fans at the Court Suzanne Lenglen after his 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory over Arthur Rinderknech on Thursday.
Rinderknech attempted a lob that landed long on the last point. While Fritz, who was running towards the baseline for chasing the ball, suddenly looked into the stands to press his right index finger to his lips and say, essentially, “Hush!”
The American held the same pose for a bit before heading back toward the for post-match handshake. then spread his arms wide, wind-milled them a bit as if to egg on the rowdiness, and yelled: “Come on! I want to hear it!”
‘The crowd was just so great’ – Fritz
However, despite the win, Fritz seemed upset with the crowd with their persistent interference as he let out his frustrations with shushing them after successfully getting a match point. His on-court interview thereafter was again interrupted as the crowd got increasingly louder after noticing his silence gesture. Rinderknech himself didn’t take that well to Frtiz’s gesture and drew a heart on clay to appreciate the crowd for their support.
However, Fritz also got some support from the crowd as few U.S. supporters with signs and flags drew his attention from the front row, and he looked over and said to them, “I love you guys.”
“I came out and the crowd was so great honestly. Like, the crowd was just so great. as folks tried to drown out his voice. They cheered so well for me, I wanted to make sure that I won. Thanks, guys,” Fritz said in an interview after the match
