‘Thats why they are mighty England’ – Fans react as England recovers from poor start to beat New Zealand by 79 runs in 2nd ODI
England recovered from a poor start to beat New Zealand by 79 runs in the second ODI on September 10 at the Rose Bowl Cricket Ground in Southampton. Earlier, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham won the toss and invited the home team to bat first in the rain-curtailed match. Notably, after being sent to bat first, the hosts had a terrible start owing to magnificent bowling spells by left-arm pacer Trent Boult.
England batters Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes departed after scoring runs in single digits. Later, great all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran stuck a partnership as the star batters hammered 95 and 42 runs, respectively, to post 226/7 runs in the given 34 overs. Later, while chasing, the Black Caps could only rack up 147 runs before getting all out, which helped the hosts level up the series at 1-1 in the four-match ODI series.
We wanted to find ways to put pressure back on the opposition: Jos Buttler
Meanwhile, England white ball skipper Jos Buttler expressed his happiness for the great comeback made by his team after reducing the score to 55/5. The stylish right-handed batter heaps praise on Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran for the wonderful partnerships they made at numbers 7 and 8 despite losing the six wickets. In addition, the wicketkeeper batsman reveals that their side always wanted to put pressure on the opposition, regardless of the situation. Moreover, the 33-year-old cricketer says their squad knows their particular roles to execute on the play. The Taunton-born player says that their squad has already planned to improve in the second match after losing the first ODI.
“To be able to post a total like that is credit to the way we wanted to play. Liam came with intent and Curran was also good. We wanted to find ways to put pressure back on the opposition and, push their lengths because there was enough help for bowlers initially. Encouraging everyone to be ultra positive. Defining roles will come. Everyone is pretty clear with the options they have in the team. Livingstone and Curran batting at 7 and 8, well within their right to bat higher. We talked about improving from the last game,” Jos Buttler said during post match presentation.
Meanwhile, both teams will lock horns on September 13 for the third ODI.
