The popular MOBA game ‘Smite’ is finally getting a full-fledged sequel development using Unreal Engine 5. The new game was announced during the Smite World Championships which will feature a complete overhaul in gameplay and visuals.

While the concept of the original game was the same as other MOBAs, it featured a third-person perspective. Players used to play as Gods and Goddesses which were classified into five classes. These were Assassin, Hunter, Guardian, Mage, or Warrior.

Smite 2 will retain the same gameplay, alongside improving on it. Developed by using Unreal Engine 5, players will also get better visuals and improved gameplay. Although, they will still be able to play the original game with the release of the sequel.

Executive producer Alex Cantatore said, “In Smite, you’re playing as a God, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like you’re playing as a God. There’s not a lot of impact on your abilities, there are not a lot of spectacles.”

Players concerned about the future

While the game was undoubtedly an underdog among others, it managed to survive thanks to the dedicated players. However, now the players are concerned about the old game.

As per the developers, older cosmetic items will not be transferable to Smite 2. Only gem-purchasable skins added to Year 11 of Smite will be transferred. While the devs are confident in the game of the new game, they are concerned about the inventory transfer.

To address the issue, the developers have introduced Legacy Gem. The gems can be used to make in-game purchases at a discount. Furthermore, the first update of Year 11 will introduce “Divine Legacy”. Depending on their total play time, players can get up to 11 skins.

Despite all the bells and whistles, it is clear that players are losing a lot of what they invested in the original game. If the devs do not handle it well, it may turn into an Overwatch 2 situation.
