Australia beat India in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Holkar Stadium in Indore to qualify for the finals of the Test Championship. Aussies defeated the hosts by nine wickets after chasing below par score of 76 runs in the first session of Day 3. The visitors were able to turn the series around under the leadership of stand-in captain Steve Smith after having two disastrous games under Pat Cummins.

After defeating India, Smith entered the list of some great captains who have won two or more Test matches in India. After his successful run in Indore fans and former players are demanding he becomes full-time captain of Australia replacing Cummins. However, Smith has a different point of view and has called this Australian Team “Cummins’ Team”.

Talking about his captaincy Smith said, “I enjoyed it and like captaining in this part of the world as I understand the conditions well. There’s an event every ball and [it’s] a lot different to the other parts of the world, and I did a reasonable job this week.” While speaking with Star sports after the game, the star Aussie batter was asked about Full-time captaincy. In response, he said, “My time as a captain is done. This is Pat Cummins’s team”.

Sunil Gavaskar praised Steve Smith’s captaincy

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 has been disastrous for Steve Smith with the bat, but his leadership skills in the absence of skipper Pat Cummins have worked well for the team. His tactical and strategic bowling changes have impressed everyone, including former India captain Sunil Gavaskar.

During his commentary stints, Gavaskar, along with Matthew Hayden, admired Smith’s leadership quality and called it differential in the game. However, Gavaskar believed that A no-ball from Ravindra Jadeja on the first day of the third Test cost the India match and it was the turning point.

Meanwhile, both teams will move to Ahmedabad for the last Test of the series. India will look to bounce back to qualify for the finals of the Test Championship. Meanwhile, fans reacted to Steve Smith’s captaincy skills. A Twitter user referring to his comments about Full-time captaincy said, “tu hi kar bhai.”
