Virat Kohli fined for breaching Code of Conduct against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL

Virat Kohli, the batting maestro for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), was penalised 10% of his match’s earnings for violating the IPL code of conduct following their eight-run loss against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.  The high-octane IPL clash on Monday featured a record-equalling 33 sixes. When these teams faced off at the same venue in 2018, the previous all-time record of 33 sixes during an Indian Premier League game was also set. 

In an official statement where the fine was handed out read that, “Mr Kohli admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.” The statement further read that, “Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.”

The event that resulted in the code of conduct breach was not fully described in the IPL statement, but it may have been caused by the former RCB captain’s excessive celebration when Shivam Dube, a middle-order batter for CSK, was dismissed by Wayne Parnell on Monday. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s CSK squad scored a whopping 226 for 6 in the “Southern Derby,” winning by eight runs thanks to Dube’s 27-ball 52.

The breach has no other consequences apart from the fine that has been enforced on the former skipper Virat Kohli. He had a poor outing against Chennai Super Kings last night as he was dismissed for 6 runs by youngster Akash Singh. He was unlucky to be dismissed as the ball first hit his leg and then travelled on to hit the stumps leading to his first single-digit score of this year’s tournament. He is still amongst the top run-getters of this year’s IPL and would be looking to get back to scoring ways in the next game.
