‘Viru paa always on point’ – Fans abuzz as Virender Sehwag comes up with witty tweet after Shubman Gill’s controversial dismissal

Disappointment permeated the crowd when tea was called during the World Test Championship (WTC) Final between Australia and India. When the “OUT” signal was shown on the big screen, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma both expressed visibly unhappy facial expressions.

Boos from the audience indicated their displeasure with how the situation had developed. The opening pair that had given India a strong start, though, was broken, giving Australia some consolation. Up until Scott Boland produced a noticeable bounce from a good length delivery, both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill displayed solid batting and were unaffected by the new ball.

Australia currently has the upper hand in the match thanks to a good position supported by a significant run total and the benefit of a relatively new ball.  Shubman Gill was dismissed in the match’s sixth over after being struck by a delivery bowled by Scott Boland. Cameron Green made a superb catch as Gill attempted to protect the ball but instead managed to edge it to the gully. As soon as the catch was made, the fielders quickly appealed, and the umpires discussed the decision.

Shubman Gill left the game having scored 18 runs off of 19 balls

To check if the catch was taken properly, it was taken upstairs for closer inspection. The video replay revealed that Green first caught the ball with his left hand, but as he finished the catch, his hand made contact with the ground owing to the power of the impact. The final judgment of “OUT” was shown on the big screen after the third umpire reviewed the video and determined that Green had his fingertips underneath the ball.

Shubman Gill was forced to return to the pavilion after once again falling prey to Boland. By continuously bowling a solid length around the off stump, Boland maintained his stellar bowling performance. The ball bounced up and took the edge of Gill’s bat as he attempted to defend, placing Green in an awkward position to perform a fantastic low catch at the gully. Gill left the game having scored 18 runs off of 19 balls, two of which were boundaries.

Following his dismissal, Virender Sehwag took to Twitter and reminded all that in case of non-conclusive evidence, the benefit of the doubt should go to the batter. He posted a hilarious photo of a blindfolded man and captioned it, “Third umpire while making that decision of Shubman Gill. Inconclusive evidence. When in doubt, it’s Not Out.”
