Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played each other in the 38th game of the ODI World Cup 2023 game on Monday in New Delhi. The game on Monday saw huge controversy take place after Angelo Mathews was adjudged timed out to cause major shock and debate in the cricketing circles.

Bangladesh have already been eliminated from the ODI World Cup 2023. Shakib Al Hasan and his side need to win to qualify for the 2025 Champions trophy to be held in Pakistan. Sri Lanka on the other still had a mathematical chance despite their 302-run loss to India in their previous game.

Shakib AL Hasan won the toss and chose to bowl as he made one change to his playing XI. Tanzim Shakib came in for Mustafizur Rahman who wasn’t fit. Sri Lanka made two changes as Kusal Perera and Dhananjaya De Silva came in for Dimuth Karunaratne and Dushan Hemantha.

Angelo Mathews given out in dramatic fashion

Former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Matthews was sent back to the pavilion even before the 36-year-old could face a ball. Mathews came to the wicket at the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama.

There was a halt in play to leave the fans in the stadium and people watching on TV confused. It soon came to light that Angelo Mathews had taken a lot of time to get ready. This prompted Shakib Al Hasan to appeal for timed-out dismissal.

The commentators later explained the confusion about the decision to give Angelo Mathews timed out. Even before he could take guard, Angelo Mathews had called for a change in the helmet. At this point, Shakib AL Hasan could be seen having a word with the umpires.

The two on-field officials called Angelo Mathews and had a word with him. The former Lankan skipper was protesting and pleading his innocence, but the umpires remained unmoved.

The official law states “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”

While this is bound to create another spirit of cricket debate, this was a huge call made by the Bangladeshi skipper. An upset and irate Angelo Mathews was seen walking away and throwing away his helmet in disgust.
