WATCH: Daniil Medvedev stuns everyone with passing shot off a smash against Alexander Zverev

On Tuesday, at the BNP Paribas Open, Daniil Medvedev defeated Alexander Zverev after bouncing back from a difficult fall to extend his scorching winning streak to 17 games. The fifth seed collapsed when moving out wide at 2-3 in the second set and injured his right ankle, howling in pain.

He proceeded, though, and changed the tide of the match by winning on his second match point to defeat the 12th-seeded German with a decisive 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5 victory after having his ankle wrapped.

“When I twisted [my ankle], I thought I was going to stand up just fine. But then the pain started growing very fast, so I was like ‘That is not a good sign.’ I felt like I didn’t break it but I felt that one of the ligaments was a little injured, so I thought I wasn’t going to be able to play. It was one of the first times in my life that the physio had taped my ankle, so I decided to give it a try. What was surprising was it was much easier to run than walk. So when I was walking I was limping and then I was running fine,” Medvedev said.

The aggressive fifth seed hit 40 winners in the thirteenth meeting of their rivalry while also displaying his well-known scoring ability. In order to absorb Zverev’s striking, he stayed well back from the baseline. By reducing his errors throughout the course of the match, he was able to wear down the German and advance to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells for the first time.

Medvedev saved all 10 break points he faced in the second set after dropping the first set, twice coming back from 0/40. He then produced a brilliant defensive smash at 1/1 to tie the game in the tie-break. In the third set, Medvedev came back after blowing a match point at 5-4 on serve when Zverev broke. But, Medvedev would not be discouraged and broke once more after Zverev committed a double fault. He then held serve to win the match after three hours and sixteen minutes.

The 27-year-old has a 7-6 advantage over Zverev in their ATP Head2Head series after defeating the German in the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals championship match.
