Watch: Mohammed Shami sends Peter Handscomb’s off stump flying on Day 1 of 4th BGT Test in Ahmedabad

The last Test of the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test series is being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India had won in Nagpur and Delhi to take a 2-1 series lead coming into the game. They just suffered a resounding loss in the third Test in Indore. The fourth Test’s opening day hung in the balance as Australia finished at 255/4 after 90 overs.

Star pacer Mohammed Shami remained the pick of the bowlers for India with two scalps for 65 runs from his 17 overs. Spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin returned with one wicket apiece on Day 1. As such, Mohammed Shami’s second wicket of the day remained the special one. Peter Handscomb missed a straight in-swinger that sent his off-stump flying; the video of the dismissal went viral online.

Here’s the viral video:

Usman Khawaja remained the star of Day 1

On the other hand, Australia star batter Usman Khawaja scored a century, the second in the series, after skipper Rohit Sharma’s heroic knock in Nagpur. Khawaja remained unbeaten at 104 off 251, while middle-order batter Cameron Green closed on his fifty, batting at 49* off 64 deliveries. Interim captain Steve Smith added 38 runs but failed to convert his start into a big knock.

Notably, the fourth Test is a crucial one for both sides. While India has a spot in the finals of the Test Championship for the 2021-23 cycle on the line, the men from down under will look to avoid defeat in the Test series. If India manages to draw the final game, they will win three back-to-back Test against the Aussies, having won the last two BGT Test series away from home. But, the hosts will then have to wait for the results of the ongoing Test series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand to get a clearer picture of their participation in the coveted final of the Test Championship.
