FIFA World Cup 2022
Watch- Nervous wait of South Korea players and fans followed by jubilation at FIFA World Cup 2022
The FIFA World Cup 2022 is already being considered one of the best ever despite only the completion of Group matches so far. In only those matches, however, the World Cup has presented fans with some of the biggest upsets in history. It all began when Saudi Arabia defeated the favourites Argentina in their World Cup opener.
A few games later, Japan gave a thumping to giants Germany. Even the 2018 World Cup winner France wasn’t spared in this World Cup that is hell-bent on disappointing the bigger teams. Japan also defeated Spain who got 6 goals past Costa Rica in their opening match and looked like one of the favourites.
Portugal, who had a disappointing Euro 2020, looked good in FIFA World Cup 2022 so far- until they met South Korea. The Asian team led by Son Heung- Min needed a win against Portugal in their last group match to progress into the next round and that is what they did. Their qualification however also depended on Uruguay losing or winning by not more than 2 goals against Ghana.
South Korea managed to do their bit for the qualification as they defeated Portugal by 2-1 in their last group game. Kim Young-gwon and Hwang Hee-chan scored two goals for the Asian team that downed Portugal.
Here’s South Korean players’ and fans’ reaction after win:

They however did not get the confirmation of qualification even after the final whistle as the Ghana vs Uruguay game still went on. Ghana needed to hold on to just a two-goal defeat in order for South Korea to advance into the Round of 16.
A new video has now emerged that shows South Korean players as well as fans waiting for the Ghana vs Uruguay match to finish. As soon as they were signalled of the match end, South Korean players as well as fans jumped with absolute euphoria. Many were also seen crying in the stadium which goes to show how much a Round of 16 qualification means for the nation.
