After India held New Zealand to a score of 99 for 8 in 20 overs, nobody would have predicted that the Lucknow T20I would go right down to the wire. However, the five spinners in the New Zealand attack were spot on, choking runs to apply pressure and plucking up wickets at regular intervals.

Even though their partnership only lasted for 20 runs, Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar managed to neutralize the spin danger before the latter was out in the 15th over of the chase due to a terrible mix-up. Suryakumar tried to play the reverse sweep in response to Glenn Phillips’ thrown-up off-spin delivery.

As the ball drifted towards the backward point and Suryakumar took off on a run, New Zealand quickly erupted into a loud cry for LBW, but Sundar had raised his hand to object. Sundar had actually called, but Suryakumar ignored it and continued to run. In the meantime, the fielder from the backward point took the ball in his hands and successfully caused the run-out. Sundar was forced to give up his wicket, leaving Suryakumar furious with the all-rounder.

Watch it here:

It was my mistake, it was definitely not a run: Suryakumar Yadav

“It was very important for him (SKY) to stay till the end and certain things like that happen in a game. Especially when things get quite tough in the middle, one misjudgment happens,” Sundar said after India won the match.

The sacrifice for Suryakumar was successful because the batter maintained his composure to send the penultimate delivery of the innings whizzing beyond cover for a boundary. When Suryakumar received his Man of the Match trophy, he later expressed regret for the error. “It was my mistake, it was definitely not a run, I didn’t see where the ball was going.”

India’s captain Hardik Pandya referred to the Lucknow pitch as a “shocker” on Sunday after India defeated New Zealand by six wickets in a low-scoring second T20I to tie the three-match T20I series at 1-1.
