‘What kind of a shot was he looking to play?’ – Former India batter criticizes Shubman Gill after throwing his wicket against England in 1st Test match
India’s legendary batter, Sunil Gavaskar bashed Shubman Gill for throwing away his wicket in the first test match between India and England in Hyderabad. Gill looked comfortable as the day started, however, the happiness didn’t last long. He batted carefully throughout day 1 and the first half of day 2. The way he threw his wicket sparked a lot of criticism. England spinner Tom Hartley got his first wicket in the form of Gill.
Gavaskar during commentary said, “What kind of a shot was he looking to play? One can understand if he was looking to play it in the air but it was just a badly executed on-drive. He did all the hard work and then played a shot like that.”
Shubman Gill’s test failure continues as he failed to convert his score once again. Converting his 20s and 30s into something more has become a daunting task for Gill. So far, his test average after 20 matches is still 20. This shows his struggle in test matches. With the absence of Virat Kohli, Gill’s slow approach toward the game might put India in a tricky position. Moreover, it will be interesting to see him bat in the second innings.
It has been a pretty challenging wicket for the last two or three years – Head Coach Rahul Dravid
Shubman Gill is having a tough time playing Test cricket in any given condition. His average has been reduced to 27.63 although he had scored an amazing 128 against Australia. However, head coach Rahul Dravid has shown his faith in Gill and said that he is giving his best and will get the desired results with time. The 23-year-old batter has recently won the ‘Indian Cricketer of the Year’ and is expected to give his best in the Test series.
Dravid while speaking to the reporters said, “Gill is a fine player. Starting out the journey as a cricketer sometimes…we forget that it takes a little bit of time at times. Some guys have success instantly, actually he is one of those guys who has done really well in some of his early days, especially in Australia. To be fair to him a lot of young guys coming through are playing on some challenging wickets, whether it’s been in India or England or West Indies. It has been a pretty challenging wickets for the last two or three years.”
