Asia Cup 2023
Winning two tournaments will make him one of India’s greatest’ – Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma’s legacy as Indian captain
The Men in Blue are still waiting to get their first major trophy after 2013. Notably, legendary cricketer MS Dhoni has won all three trophies for India – the T20 World Cup 2007, the ODI World Cup 2011, and the Champions Trophy 2013. In addition, former India skipper Virat Kohli has taken his side to the pinnacle of the game but couldn’t clinch the trophy in his career. Moreover, India got eliminated in the last Asia Cup in the super four stages, the 2022 T20 World Cup in the semi-final, and the WTC in the final under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, speaking on the same subject, former India cricketer turned analyst Sunil Gavaskar has answered questions about Rohit Sharma’s legacy as skipper. Notably, the former India skipper says one is only judged by how many trophies he has won for the nation. In addition, the cricket commentator feels that if the 36-year-old skipper wins the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup, that will make him one of the greatest captains.
Winning tournaments will make Rohit Sharma one of India’s greatest skippers: Sunil Gavaskar
“At the end of the day you are judged by the number of trophies you have won, the numbers of wins you have. Winning these two tournaments will make him one of India’s greatest skippers,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
Moreover, the former opening batsman feels luck also plays an important role on that day. Meanwhile, the legendary cricketer feels the inclusion of all-rounders plays a pivotal role in winning any major tournaments. In addition, the 74-year-old cricketer highlighted all-rounders during the 2011 World Cup, which helped MS Dhoni’s side lift the trophy.
“More than anything else, luck of the day is very important and if you look at the teams (in 1983, 1985 and 2011), they all had top class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus of those teams. You see MSD’s team also: Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So, any team which has all-rounders (will hold the edge),” he added further.
