‘Yaar tu Rehne de’ – Fans react to Marcus Stoinis questioning third umpire decision during ODI World Cup 2023 game vs South Africa

The South African cricket team continued their dominating performance during ODI World Cup 2023. After posting 311 on the board, Temba Bavuma and his side completely outplayed the Australians.

Marcus Stoinis played his first game of the tournament after replacing Cameron Green. The Australian all-rounder had injured himself during the Mohali ODI versus India. The return to the team for Stoinis was a forgettable affair in Lucknow on Thursday.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins called the toss correctly and chose to bowl first. The toss had gone the way of Australia during their first game against India. The Aussies though were bowled out for just 199 as India won by 6 wickets.

Marcus Stoinis dismissal causes controversy –

The Proteas bowling unit was breathing fire while defending 312 to win. At 70 for 5 the onus was on Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis to rebuild the innings. Kagiso Rabada bowled a lifter as De Kock dived to his left and there was a huge appeal.

The fielders weren’t sure if there was a nick from the bat of Stoinis. The South African skipper sent the decision upstairs by taking DRS. The third umpire confirmed there was an edge and Stoinis had no other option but to walk back to the pavilion.

Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis disputed the call as the two waited. The third umpire though deemed the decision was legal as Stoinis walked back shaking his head. The batter was unhappy with the call as he was seen muttering his disbelief while taking the long walk back.

Chasing 312 to win, Australia began Mitchell Marsh and David Warner. The pair added 27 runs for the first wicket before Marsh was out for 7 caught by Bavuma off Jansen. David Warner was out next when he was caught by Van Der Dussen off Ngidi for 13.

Steve Smith came out with a positive mindset as he hit four boundaries in his knock of 19. Rabada then got the big wicket when he trapped Smith LBW to get the third wicket. Josh Inglis then missed a straight ball to be bowled by Rabada for 5.

Glenn Maxwell got a huge ovation when he came out to bat but Maxwell could score only three. Keshav Maharaj hung on to an easy caught and bowled chance to give South Africa their fifth wicket.
