‘Ye kaha se aa gya number 1 par’ – Fans react on Kane Williamson becoming number-1 ranked Test batter

Published on

The musical chair for the top spot among Test batters changes yet again. The number one spot for the Test batters have lately seen a lot of shuffles in recent times. Currently, as per the latest ranking released by Apex Cricket Council shows New Zealand captain and one of the most complete batters in modern-day cricket, Kane Williamson has been crowned as the number one Test batter in the world with 883 rating points.

Earlier, this chart was led by the former England captain Joe Root who topped the list based on the previous release but the recently concluded Lord’s Test did not exactly go well for Root. The England batter scored 10 and 18 runs in both innings of the Test. After this outing, he slipped down to a massive four position.

While the Australian batter, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head eventually went on to retain their respective places on the table. Labuschagne has retained his third spot by with a rating of 872 while Head was placed at the fourth spot with 872 points. Despite the fact that Williamson has climbed to the top spot but the rankings can change quickly as the difference between Williamson and Steven Smith who is at number two with 882 rating points is just one point.

So, it is more likely that with the kind of form in which Smith is, it is just a matter of time. It is interesting to note that only 17 rating points separate the top five batters on the updated rankings list which was released on Wednesday and this means there could be more changes if the likes of Head, Labuschagne, and Usman Khawaja perform well in the Headingley Test.

For the ranking of the Test bowlers, the Australian skipper Pat Cummins made significant progress as Cummins climbed two places and currently be placed at second spot overall, closing in on India’s premier spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who currently holds the top spot in the rankings for the best bowlers.

Here is how Twitter reacted to this change in ranking for Test batters;
