The Indian Premier League’s 13th match of the 16th edition on Sunday in Ahmedabad saw Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Gujarat Titans (GT). GT were without their skipper Hardik Pandya as he was unwell and Rashid Khan took over the reins as captain.

Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha got the Gujarat side off to a great start as they were getting good boundaries. After Saha lost his wicket, the youngster Sai Sudharsan joined Gill at the crease and built a good partnership to take the innings forward. After the duo lost their wickets, Kolkata looked like making a comeback in the game. Knight Riders got the wicket of Abhinav Manohar early and they looked like restricting them to an average total.

Let’s take a look at the KKR chase

Vijay Shankar ended KKR’s party by leading them to 204/4 with an unbeaten 63 from 24 balls that included four fours and five maximums. All of Shankar’s sixes came in the last two overs, during which he hit Lockie Ferguson for a pair and Shardul Thakur for a hat-trick of sixes.

Venkatesh Iyer along with Nitish Rana assisted Kolkata Knight Riders in overcoming early setbacks in the 205-run chase versus Gujarat Titans. Rahmanullah Gurbaz as well as Narayan Jagadeesan were lost early and cheaply for the team. Iyer and the captain, however, had put together a third-wicket partnership and maintained the required run-rate.

But under the pressure of chasing the huge total, the Kolkata skipper caved in and lost his wicket to Alzaari Joseph in trying to get extra boundaries for his side. Venkatesh Iyer was still at the crease and was getting the much needed boundaries. Joseph got the prize wicket as Iyer departed for 83 off just 40 balls. Rashid Khan, the stand-in skipper came to bowl his final over to the danger man Russell and got his wicket off the first ball. He was then able to scalp the next two batters as well in successive deliveries to get a much deserved hat-trick.

That extraordinary over from Rashid Khan helped Gujarat to scrap back into the tie. Rinku Singh took the game close as the team needed 29 runs in six balls. He hit five sixes off the last five balls to take his side to a win from almost a losing position. Kolkata won their second straight game of the tournament and what a win this was.
