Match number 32 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw the two powerhouses of cricket and two consistent sides in this World Cup, South Africa take on the New Zealand side. The match was expected to be run feast as both the teams possessed some serious batting talents. But the match eventually turned out to be a one-sided affair as the South African team thrashed the Black Caps by 190 runs. With this win the South African team has now again jumped onto the top points table. In addition to this, the New Zealand team have lost their last three matches.

The match started with Kiwi skipper, Tom Latham winning the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that assisted batting. Temba Bavuma had a promising start, but his innings was cut short when he got caught at slip. The pitch was challenging for batting, and Rassie van der Dussen initially struggled with his timing. However, he gradually settled in and formed a strong partnership with Quinton de Kock, marking their second 200-run stand in the tournament. Both batsmen reached centuries, with van der Dussen securing his second ton of the competition, while de Kock notched up his fourth.

Trent Boult was the standout bowler, claiming an early wicket and maintaining an excellent economy rate. Despite some missed opportunities in the field, New Zealand was faced with the daunting task of chasing down a substantial target of 358 runs. David Miller’s rapid half-century further bolstered the South African innings.

New Zealand’s batting woes cost them the match

South Africa’s response in the bowling department was highly effective, as Jansen dismissed Conway early in the innings, and New Zealand’s batters struggled against the tall South African pacers with the new ball. Apart from Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, and Glenn Phillips, the rest of the Kiwi batsmen only managed to score in the single digits, highlighting the outstanding performance by the South African bowlers.

The Proteas’ pace trio applied immense pressure, bowled numerous dot balls, and took crucial wickets. Maharaj capitalized on this pressure by claiming a couple of key wickets and cleaning up the tail. In the end, Keshav Maharaj secured a four-wicket haul, while Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, and Kagiso Rabada shared the remaining six wickets. South Africa’s resounding victory brought them closer to the semifinals.
