‘Ye to hona hi tha’ – Fans react as Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 5 wickets in 2nd game of Asia Cup 2023

In the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh faced defending champions Sri Lanka in the first game of Group B. In the rain-interrupted game, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by five wickets. Riding on excellent bowling performances from Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Teekshana, Sri Lanka restricted Bangladesh to a mere 164/10 in 42.4 overs before comfortably chasing it.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan opted to bat first. The decision didn’t go well with the team, as Bangladesh lost three wickets for just 36 runs. Openers Mohammad Naim and Tanzid Hasan were dismissed by Dhanjaya de Silva and Maheesh Teekshana for 16 and 0, respectively. Skipper Shakib was dismissed by Patheerana after playing a poor shot for just five runs.

After their departure, Najmol Hossain Shanto tried to rescue his team with a blistering half-century. Shanto, in his innings, scored 89 runs off 122 balls with the help of seven boundaries. Apart from him, not a single Bangladeshi batter looked comfortable against the Sri Lankan bowling line-up. In the end, Bangladesh posted a mere total of 164/10 in 42.4 overs.

Sri Lanka recovered well from early strikes.

Chasing 165 was not easy for Sri Lanka, as they lost three wickets for just 45 runs. Openers Dithum Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, and Kusal Mendis were dismissed by Shoriful Islam, Taskin Ahmed, and Shakib Al Hasan, respectively. However, Sadera Samrawickrama and Charith Aslanka added 76 runs for the fourth wicket. Samrawickrama scored 54 runs off 77 balls with the help of six boundaries.

Meanwhile, Aslanka, in his innings, scored an unbeaten 62 runs off 92 balls with the help of five fours and a six. In the end, skipper Shanaka helped Sri Lanka cross the target and win the game.
