‘You played like a champ’ – Fans react as Rashid Khan shares inspiring message after Afghanistan’s elimination from Asia Cup 2023

Heartbreak followed for Afghanistan as Sri Lanka qualified for the Super Fours on September 6 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. Earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and invited Afghanistan to field first. Notably, after being opted to bat first, the Sri Lankan side posted 291/8 in the first 50 overs. Wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis hammered 92 runs from 84 balls, featuring six boundaries and three sixes, to post a great total against Afghanistan.

Later, while chasing, Afghanistan needed to chase down the target in 37.2 overs to qualify for the Super Fours. Notably, Afghanistan’s top order batter failed, but their middle order batters fought really hard to chase down the target. But Dasun Shanaka’s side held their nerves to win the match by 2 runs, which meant that Afghanistan were out of the Asia Cup 2023 after being dismissed for 289 runs in 37.4 overs.

Notably, skipper Shahidi hammered 59 runs, while Mohammad Nabi scored 65 runs to reach the total but lost three wickets at crucial times. In addition, star spinner Rashid Khan remained unbeaten with 27 runs from 16 balls but couldn’t cross the finishing line. Meanwhile, after being out of the tournament, Gujarat Titans bowler Rashid Khan shared an inspiring message on Twitter.

The leg-spinner said that there are always ups and downs in sports. In addition, the 24-year-old cricketer thanked the individuals who supported them. “In sport there are many ups and downs. You learn, grow and come back stronger. Thank you for always supporting us,” Rashid Khan wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, in Group A, the Nepal team has also been knocked out of the Asia Cup, whereas India and Pakistan are headed towards the Super Fours. In Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified for the Super Four rounds. In the Asia Cup 2022, Afghanistan’s team managed to get a place in the Super Fours but couldn’t reach the final.
