Asia Cup 2023
‘You will see someone will be replacing him’ – Gautam Gambhir on Shreyas Iyer’s injury ahead of ODI World Cup 2023
Despite winning the Asia Cup 2023, the Indian team management looked a bit worried owing to the injuries players are sustaining ahead of the ODI World Cup. Notably, India’s star batter, Shreyas Iyer, has marked his comeback in the squad of the Asia Cup, where he played group-stage matches. However, the star middle-order batter again got back spasms ahead of the Super Fours, which set him to miss all three Super Fours games as well as the Final of the Asia Cup 2023.
Following the same incident, former India cricketer turned analyst Gautam Gambhir feels it is a matter of concern, making a bold statement about keeping him out of the ODI World Cup squad. The former India opener says that one will surely witness some other player replacing him in the ODI World Cup while claiming that players must be fully fit ahead of the ODI World Cup. In addition, the 2011 World Cup-winning star feels that Indian management won’t be picking the KKR skipper as he seems unfit despite marking his return.
You will see Shreyas Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad: Gautam Gambhir
“It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for Asia Cup, play one match and then again become unfit. I don’t think after this team management will pick up him for such a big tournament. You will see in the coming days that Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him. You should always go into a World Cup with fit players,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports.
In addition, the 41-year-old cricketer called this an unfortunate situation, as the right-handed batter was only able to get one match to play against Pakistan in the group stage of the Asia Cup 2023 after the comeback. “Performance is a different thing. Whatever his form was, it was 7-8 months back after which he only played in one game. So it is unfortunate,” he added further.
