‘Yeh toh hathi ke tara khuchaldega’ – Fans react as Rahkeem Cornwall makes his comeback in West Indies’ Test squad after 20 months

The West Indies named a 13-man team for the first Test against India commencing July 12 in Dominica, which will mark the beginning of the third cycle of the World Test Championship for both teams. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican and spin-bowling all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall have made their return to the squad after a long hiatus.

The injury to spinner Gudakesh Motie is seen to be one of the main factors in Warrican’s inclusion back into the Test team. He had previously travelled to Zimbabwe, but he skipped this year’s South Africa tour. “Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie is unavailable for selection as he is undergoing rehabilitation from injury,” Cricket West Indies was quoted as saying in a statement.

These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity: Desmond Haynes

Since November 2021, Cornwall hasn’t played for the West Indies in red-ball cricket, after making his Test debut against India back in 2019. He and Warrican will likely face off in the first Test, with the hosts set to select three specialized pacers to take on the explosive Indian batting lineup.

“We are without Motie, who is doing his rehabilitation, and this has created an opportunity for Warrican and Cornwall in the spin bowling department. They have both played at Test match level before and are capable of doing the job,” chief selector Desmond Haynes was quoted as saying.

Alick Athanaze and Kirk McKenzie, both left-handed batters, are the team’s two newcomers. “We were very impressed with the approach to batsmanship of McKenzie and Athanaze on the recent ‘A’ Team tour of Bangladesh. These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity, and we believe they deserve an opportunity,” Haynes asserted.

The West Indies team is currently in pre-series camp at Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua, and they will be leaving for Dominica on Sunday. In preparation for the game, they will train on Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning.
