OTD: Yuvraj Singh smashed 6 sixes off Stuart Broad in T20I World Cup 2007 and set record for fastest half century in international cricket

On this day, 16 years ago, India’s star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh smashed six sixes in English star pacer Stuart Broad’s single over and set the fastest fifty record in cricket history during the inaugural edition of the T20I World Cup 2007 held in South Africa. Notably, the former India cricketer has appeared in 58 matches in the shortest format of the game, accumulating 1177 runs and scoring eight half-centuries in his career.

Speaking here about the match, on September 19, 2007, the MS Dhoni-led side locked horns against England during the must-win game in the Super Eight encounter. India’s great openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag smashed half-centuries as they piled up 58 and 68 runs, respectively, to give the side a powerful start. Following that, Robin Uthappa departed cheaply for just six runs.

With just 20 balls remaining, star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh set up and smashed six straight sixes and completed his fifty in just 12 balls, along with MS Dhoni, who also scored not out 10 runs to post a massive total of 218 runs in the given 20 overs. Later, while chasing, the English team also had a great start but fell short by 18 runs, which helped India make their way to the playoffs.

Later, the tournament was won by Team India, and left-handed batter Yuvraj Singh was one of the key players in India’s success in winning the inaugural edition of the tournament. Meanwhile, English star pacer Stuart Broad’s determination saw him bounce back from this period, as the right-arm pacer went on to become one of the greatest fast bowlers in Test cricket. Notably, the 37-year-old has retired after appearing in Ashes 2023, where he played an important role in drawing the series for his side in the fifth and last Test match despite Australia winning the first two Tests on the English soil.
