WPL 2024: Every retention and release ahead of the next season
Women’s Premier League 2023 was a massive success as massive crowds came to watch the event. Mumbai Indians led by Harmanpreet Kaur won the title after beating Delhi Capitals in the Finals.
The successful first season has raised the excitement and expectation for the next season. On Thursday each of the five times gave their list of the retained and released players. Gujarat Giants were the only team to retain very less players while releasing a host of players.
Mumbai Indians on the other hand kept their team together and released the bench players. The next season just like the 2023 edition will be played before the start of IPL 2024.
Shocks and surprises as teams submit their released and retained players –
Harmanpreet Kaur led Mumbai Indians released just four players with Heather Graham being one of the names. The likes of Hayley Matthews, Natalie Sciver, and Izzy Wong will play for the blue and gold again next season.
Smriti Mandhana and her RCB team saw 7 players being released. Dane Van Niekerk, Erin Burns, and Megan Schutt are the most prominent names. The faithful fans of Chinnaswamy Stadium will be happy to know that Elyse Perry is still part of the team.
Delhi Capitals have retained all their big guns while letting go of just three players. Hemlata Kala the assistant coach of DC came out and said “The franchise organised a couple of off-season camps over the last few months, which has allowed us as a coaching group to have a look at the available talent, and also assess the physical condition and skills of our existing players. We’re hoping for a successful auction going into the new season”
Jonathan Batty who happens to be the head coach of the Delhi Capitals outfit said “We’ve got a solid squad in place, and will aim to make it more complete at the upcoming auction”. The auction for WPL 2024 is set to be held pretty soon and the rest of the players will look to find a new home.
Women’s premier league has five teams with Mumbai, Delhi, UP, Gujarat, and Bangalore as the teams. Some of the big names in world cricket are playing in the tournament and ahead of the next auction, a total of 60 players have been retained.
