WATCH: Mohammed Shami gets five wickets vs New Zealand in ODI World Cup 2023

*33-year-old Mohammed Shami made an immediate impact in his first game for India during the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. Replacing Shardul Thakur in the team, the right-arm fast bowler took this third fifer in ODI cricket on Sunday.

Put into bat first, the Kiwis posted a healthy-looking 273 runs on the board from their 50 overs. Daryl Mitchell was the standout performer for New Zealand as he scored his fifth ODI century on Sunday.

Tom Latham lost the toss as India opted to field first. The New Zealand team went into the game and placed number 1 in the points table. India came into the game in the 2nd spot as both teams have yet to lose a game in the World Cup so far.

Mohammed Shami makes a memorable comeback to the Indian team –

Called into bowl in the 9th over of the New Zealand innings, Mohammed Shami made an immediate impact. With his very first ball of the game and the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign, the 33-year-old got the wicket of Will Young for 17.

The second wicket for Shami came in the 34th over as he broke the 159-run third wicket stand. Rachin Ravindra batting on 75 lofted the ball straight into the waiting hands of Shubman Gill.

The Indian bowlers needed to fight back if they had to keep the Kiwis under 300 and that was provided by Shami. The right-arm fast bowler first knocked Mitchell Santner’s off-stump for 1. This was followed by a searing Yorker to dismiss Matt Henry for a first-ball duck.

Shami missed his hat-trick as Lockie Ferguson played the ball straight to the fielder. Daryl Mitchell then hit the Indian seamer for a four and a six. Shami though had the last laugh when he had Mitchell caught in the boundary by Kohli for 130.

This was the third five-wicket haul for Mohammed Shami in ODI cricket and his 2nd in three innings. His first fifer was against England in the Oval during the 2019 ODI World Cup. Shami’s best figures of 5/51 came during the Mohali ODI versus Australia before the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. With this 5/54 performance, Mohammad Shami now has nailed a place in the team for the rest of the tournament.
