Breaking! Apex Cricket Body suspends Sri Lanka Cricket Board Membership

Cricket’s Apex Body delivered a huge body blow to Sri Lankan cricket and its fans. In what is already a shocking development the Sri Lankan Cricket Board’s membership has been suspended. The decision was taken by the Apex Cricket Body after its meeting which was held on Friday.

The Sri Lankan team has already finished its ODI World Cup 2023 commitments on Thursday. Kusal Mendis and his team lost to New Zealand by five wickets in their final game in Bengaluru.

After the loss to New Zealand on Thursday, the Sri Lankans ended the ODI World Cup placing 9th in the table. This result also meant that the Island Nation will not participate in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

More despair for the Sri Lankan cricket team

After their dismal showing in the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament, there was more bad news for the Sri Lankan team. The Apex Cricket Body on Friday has reached a conclusion and suspended the membership of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.

This decision was made after the Apex Cricket Body found some ‘Serious Breaches of Obligations’ on the part of the Sri Lankan Board. As per the revelations made it was found that the Sri Lankan government was interfering with the running of Sri Lankan Cricket.

The rules for every cricket member part of the Apex Cricket Body have to abide by certain obligations. One of the obligations pertains to a member being run with autonomous powers and without intervention from the local government.

The Sri Lankan cricket team and its board have been in chaos since the debacle during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The last nail in the coffin was the 302-run loss to India at the Wankhede Stadium. After the loss, there were serious questions asked to the board after the abject loss to India. Ever since the start of the ODI World Cup 2023, the Sri Lankans have been plagued with issues on and off the field. It began with regular skipper Dasun Shanaka getting injured versus Pakistan.

Angelo Mathews then became the first-ever player to be given Timed Out during the game versus Bangladesh. This further created more animosity between the two teams as the Sri Lankans refused to shake the Bangladeshi team member’s hands. After delivering its verdict, the Apex Cricket Body has yet to determine ‘Conditions of Suspension’. It is still not clear if the Sri Lankan team will be allowed to take part in the 2024 T20 World Cup next year in June.
