‘You don’t deserve to lead our team’ – Fans react as Shaheen Afridi opens up after being appointed as T20I captain of Pakistan
Pakistan cricket team has an awful campaign for the ODI World Cup 2023 owing to their poor performances in the edition. Notably, the Pakistan cricket team had a great start to their campaign as they beat the Netherlands in their opening game. In addition, Babar Azam and Co. registered a historic win over Sri Lanka in the second clash.
Following their first two wins, host and archrival India thrashed them by eight wickets in their third match. Notably, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa also beat them, which makes it difficult to qualify for the semis. However, the Men in Green beat New Zealand to keep alive their hopes in the semi-final, but they lost against the defending champions, which left them out of the tournament.
Meanwhile, following their awful performances, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has resigned from the captaincy and promises to continue to play all three formats as the batter. Notably, many cricket experts and pundits have lashed out at the 29-year-old skipper, who failed to help their side win a single trophy in his last four years of captaincy.
Thank you to the Pakistan cricket board and fans for their trust: Shaheen Afridi
After his resignation, the PCB has announced left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi as the white-ball format skipper. However, the young cricketer took to Twitter and expressed his happiness at being the Pakistan captain. Shaheen Afridi was extremely proud and honoured to lead his side after Babar Azam. Moreover, the 23-year-old cricketer promises to give his best in the game to bring glory to their nation in major tournaments.
“I am honoured and thrilled to lead our national T20 cricket team. Thank you to the Pakistan cricket board and fans for their trust and support. I’ll give my best to uphold the team spirit and bring glory to our nation on the cricket field. Our success lies in unity, trust and relentless effort. We are not just a team; we are a brotherhood, a family. Together, we rise! #PakistanZindabad,” Shaheen Afridi wrote on X.
Check out how fans have reacted to his tweet:
