‘DC just nailed it’ – Fans react as Delhi Capitals outbid Mumbai Indians for Annabel Sutherland in WPL 2024 auction

The Women’s Premier League 2024 auction in Mumbai witnessed the Delhi Capitals successfully outbid the defending champion Mumbai Indians to acquire Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherlands in their camp on December 9. Notably, the Gujarat Giants have released her ahead of the WPL 2024, and the Delhi Capitals (DC) have grabbed her services for the upcoming edition.

In addition, the right-handed batter became the second-most expensive Australian player in history to be sold at a WPL auction. Moreover, the 22-year-old all-rounder recently had a tremendous Women’s Big Bash League campaign. Sutherland, who was a member of the Melbourne Stars, grabbed 23 wickets and scored 288 runs in the recently concluded competition.

The Delhi Capitals and the defending champion Mumbai Indians competed in a dramatic bidding war. The Mumbai Indians’ owner, Neeta Ambani, spent INR 1.90 crore to get her into the MI camp. However, due to a lack of funding, they had to pull out of the competition.

Annabel Sutherlands scored 48 runs and took three wickets in the four games of WPL 2023

Moreover, the 22-year-old all-rounder was bought by the Gujarat Giants for an impressive Rs 70 lakh in the 2023 WPL auctions. In addition, the middle-order batter took part in the Women’s Premier League’s first season. But Annabel Sutherlands did manage to score 48 runs and take three wickets in the four games that she played in the 2023 WPL.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals had a great edition of the WPL 2023, and they were the first team to reach the finals of the WPL 2023 after their win over UP Warriors in the playoffs. However, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians dominated the Delhi Capitals in the final of the WPL 2023, which made them lose the final game.
