Veteran Pakistan pacer believes Mohammad Amir could make comeback into national team
Considering the uncertainty and politics surrounding Pakistan’s participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in India, many cricket fans and analysts will be curious to know if Babar Azam and the company will compete in the 50-over competition or not.
All eyes will be on their bowling team, which is led by Shaheen Shah Afridi if they succeed. Choosing the remaining positions will be extremely difficult for the selectors now that Shaheen is a lock to be included in the pace battery with Haris Rauf.
While speaking to Samaa News, Pakistan veteran speedster Wahab Riaz opined that he wanted Mohammad Amir to feature in the recently concluded major tournament. He also believed that Mohammad Amir may return to international cricket, pointing out his rivalry for the remaining spots.
Mohammad Amir played his final game for Pakistan in 2020
“We may see Mohammad Amir coming back to play for Pakistan once again. We have Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf but the other three spots are still available. Bowlers like Hasan (Ali), (Shahnawaz) Dahani, Naseem (Shah), and (Muhammad) Wasim are fighting for it. Amir may come back, too,” he said.
Amir quit international cricket in December 2020, blaming the Pakistan Cricket Board for mistreatment (PCB). This followed his decision to end his Test cricket career in July 2019. He played for Pakistan in the 2019 ODI World Cup and took 17 wickets in eight games.
Amir was also suspended for five years on August 10 owing to spot-fixing for intentionally bowling two no-balls throughout his international career. He admitted guilt to the Apex Council of Cricket and openly begged for pardon. At one moment, the fast bowler was the spearhead of the Pakistan pace attack.
He was found guilty of a spot-fixing conspiracy in November 2011 at Southwark Crown Court along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, and he was sentenced to three months in prison. In 2016, he came back to play for Pakistan during their tour of New Zealand. In August 2020, he played his final game for Pakistan.
