Watch: West Indies debutant picks Steve Smith’s wicket during first Test

West Indies debutant Shamar Joseph took the wicket of Steve Smith before the end of Day One of the ongoing first Test. In the game, the home team won the toss and elected to bowl first. They had a great start and kept taking wickets and reduced the Maroon Brigade to 133/9. The last pair of Kemar Roach and Joseph added 55 runs for the last wicket.

The likes of Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins took four wickets each. On the other hand, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon took one wicket. In reply, the World Test Championship winners had a poor start as Smith (12) got out to Joseph on the latter’s first ball in international cricket. The right-arm pacer came out to bowl in the ninth over of the innings

I didn’t know I would pick Steve Smith’s wicket: Shamar Joseph

After the Day’s play, the Guyana player said that he spoke to his teammates about taking a wicket on his first ball.

“I had a few conversations with the boys in the dressing room, I told him that I would get a wicket on my first ball, but I didn’t know it was Steve Smith,” Joseph said. “I really love Steve Smith, the way he goes about and plays his cricket.”

“And getting his wicket, I will remember this for the rest of my life.”

“I first ran into him live last year when West Indies were playing in Guyana. I caught a sight of him in the nets, and he has hustle, bustle, and really comes at you,” Ian Bishop had told ESPNcricinfo before the Australia series. “There’s a lot of high hopes for him because of his attitude and his physical capabilities.”
