Lalit Modi, N Srinivasan could be potential investors in THE HUNDRED
England’s THE HUNDRED is only two seasons old and has created a lot of attention whether positively or negatively. This tournament, which goes against the popular notions in the game has attracted mixed views at home. While to the new-age fans, this might seem to be a great idea, the veterans aren’t very impressed. Starting from five balls per over, bowling two back-to-back overs from the same end to the scorecard, and many more, the tournament does go against the notion.
Financially, in the first seasons of 2022 and 2023, the Men’s and Women’s competition hasn’t been able to generate much profit despite the marketing tactics. Meanwhile, as reported by the Money Control website, former IPL chairperson Lalit Modi and former Indian Cricket Board president, N Srinivasan might invest in the tournament. As per reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) might be looking for partly-privatisation of the tournament.
“The question is, to what extent are the counties willing to go? Here’s an example: What’s there for an investor if a county does not agree to a ‘deal’ that also involves real estate? Can partnerships work on a revenue-sharing basis? If yes, what’s the model? Is it sustainable?” points out a potential stakeholder.
Lalit Modi and N Srinivasan carry IPL experience
Modi, the founder and chairperson of the IPL, has seen the transition of the cash-rich league to one of the top leagues when he was at the post from 2008-2011. On the other hand, Srinivasan’s Chennai Super Kings, has now stakes in Joburg Super Kings (SA20) and Texas Super Kings (Major Cricket League).
“The IPL franchise owners are already making a good deal of money from the T20 league. It makes sense for them to invest money because they can sustain it. They’re already earning from a cricket league, so makes sense to expand and invest in another. For a complete outsider to put in money and break even at some point will be a bigger challenge,” says those tracking developments.
“As for Rajasthan Royals, well the franchise operates out of UK and Jaipur, considering their owner is based out of London. So, England is as good as home,” say those in the know.
