‘Hum Jeet gaye’- Twitter Breathes easy as India beat New Zealand by 12 runs in a nail-biter against New Zealand

The First ODI between India and New Zealand was held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. India won the toss and chose to bat. India got off to a good start with Rohit Sharma scoring 34 off 38 balls with four fours and two sixes. His stay was cut short by Blair Tickner. Virat Kohli was dismissed by Mitchell Santner for just 8 off 10 balls. Shubman Gill played a sensational innings off 208 off 149 balls with nineteen fours and nine sixes. He was dismissed by Henry Shipley.

After the fall of Rohit’s and Kohli’s wicket, Gill single handedly shepherded the Indian innings. Every time India lost a wicket, he was aggressive. He used the straight boundaries to good effect and once he got to his hundred changed gears and launched into the New Zealand bowlers with some towering sixes. He played at a strike rate of 140 while the others batted at 85. He became the youngest player to score a double century. The other notable contributions for India were Suryakumar Yadav who scored 31 off 26 balls with four fours.

New Zealand made a superb recovery from 131-6 to get to 337-10

Hardik Pandya scored 28 off 38 balls as he perished to Daryl Mitchell. India because of Gill’s monumental effort made their way to 348-8 in 50 overs. Mitchell was the pick of the bowlers for the black caps who picked up 2-30 in his five overs. In reply, Finn Allen and Devon Conway got the visitors off to a good start. Conway was the first to fall to Mohammed Siraj. Finn Allen made an entertaining 40 off 39 balls with seven fours and one six. Kuldeep Yadav then came into the attack and got Henry Nicholls bowled with a beautiful delivery.

Soon after he got Mitchell out lbw. Glenn Philips was clean bowled by Shami for 11. Tom Latham played a good knock off 24 off 46 balls but he was dismissed by a well-directed bouncer from Siraj and was caught by Washington Sundar. Then New Zealand made a stunning comeback from 131-6 courtesy Michael Bracewell who played some eye-catching shots in his innings of 140 off 76 balls with 12 fours and 10 sixes. He was provided good support from Santner who scored 57 form 45 balls with seven fours and one six.

Siraj broke the stand in the 46th with a good short ball to dismiss Santner and Suryakumar took a good catch. He then bowled Shipley for a duck to finish with 4-46 in his 10 overs. Hardik picked the wicket of Lockie Ferguson in the 49th over. Bracewell was dismissed leg before wicket by Shardul to give India a win by 12 runs. New Zealand finished on 337.
