Watch: India gets awarded five penalty runs as Yasir Ali hits helmet on Day 2 of first Test

The riveting action continued on Day 2 of the first Test between Bangladesh and India. India resumed their innings from 278/6 with Shreyas Iyer at the crease with Ravichandran Ashwin. Iyer was eyeing his second Test hundred as he resumed his innings on 82. However, the 28-year-old could only add four more runs to his overnight score as he got cleaned up by Ebadot Hossain in the first session.

The first session of Day 2 was further action-packed as an incident occurred which led to India being awarded five runs added to the India total. India were awarded five penalty runs after the Bangladesh fielder’s throw hit the helmet of the wicketkeeper.

Yasir Ali fielding at first slip, collected the ball after R Ashwin edged it and the ball went towards the third man. Ali threw the ball towards the wicketkeeper but the ball hit the helmet which was kept on the ground.

According to the Apex Cricket Body’s rule, penalty runs are awarded to the team batting if the ball is obstructed by the fielding team without any help of a player.

Coming back to the match, after losing Shreyas Iyer India were 293/7 and it looked like they will get all out by around 325. But Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav stitched a 92-run stand for the eighth wicket and took India closer to 400. Ashwin scored 58 while Kuldeep scored 40. Tailenders Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Siraj came and swung their bat to take India to 404.

In reply to India’s total, Bangladesh lost their first wicket on the very first ball of the innings as Najmul Hossain Shanto edged a delivery by Siraj straight to the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Bangladesh lost their second wicket on the score of five as Umesh Yadav cleaned up Yasir Ali.

Bangladesh finished the second session on 37/2 and further lost three more wickets in the final session. They were 85/5 in 26 overs trailing India by 318 runs.
